  72. Macaristan Akademisyenler Ağı’nın (The Hungarian Network of Academics) Açık Mektubu  Budapest, 26 January 2016 Dear colleagues, As scholars associated with universities and higher education institutions in Hungary and internationally, we are extremely disturbed by Turkey’s recent treatment of academics that have spoken out against atrocities being committed by the Turkish state against Kurds. We understand that 1,128 Turkish and Kurdish ‘Academics for Peace’ signed the statement on 11 January 2016 “We will not be a party to this crime”, calling on the Turkish government to cease hostilities against its Kurdish population. Since the publication of this statement, these academics have been subject to a sustained campaign of abuse and violence from both the Turkish state and its supporters. The legitimacy of detentions and future arrests has already been questioned by prominent legal experts and described as “extra-legal” decisions. We call on the Turkish government to withdraw its prosecutions, immediately release all those imprisoned and commit to the principles of academic freedom and free speech. We moreover reaffirm the Academics for Peace call on the Turkish government to cease their hostilities against Kurds. We also would like to show our solidarity and interest in cooperation with our Turkish colleagues to protect the highly esteemed value of academic freedom, without which we are not able to fulfil our tasks in favour of the society in Hungary, Turkey, or elsewhere in the world. The Hungarian Network of Academics (www.oktatoihalozat.hu) was founded in March 2012 as an autonomous organisation of lecturers and researchers, active in higher education. Its aim is to preserve the achievements and values of the sphere of Hungarian higher education and research as well as to bring about reforms and renewal. We authorise you to communicate this letter in a manner you find it appropriate. Kind regards from Budapest, on behalf of Hungarian university lecturers; contact: Professor Dániel Deák (ddeak53@me.com+36(30)9978241; skype: dddeak; www.uni-corvinus.hu/~ddeak; http://ssrn.com/author=1079368

For example we have the peace call from the academicians. Is really great what they are doing it. They are really heroes, and what happened is not that they are gets applauded by all sides, but rather they have been threatened by President Erdogan and even threaten by mafia bosses. Their lives are really under threat and their freedom is under threat. We should do everting we can to support them.

  105. Academia for Equality (Eşitlik İçin Akademi) – Destek Mesajı To: Academics for Peace, Turkey From: Academia for Equality, Israel Dearest colleagues, We are an organization of over one hundred academics committed to a just peace with the Palestinian people and to social justice within Israeli society. We learned with grave concern of the arrest of your colleagues Esra Mungan, Muzaffer Kaya and Kıvanç Ersoy. The ongoing assaults on civil liberties in the Turkish state – including the right to free speech for academics – is a terrible wrong that we condemn without reservation. We see many parallels between your group and our own: we too are citizens of a state that is complicit in the denial of the national rights of an oppressed people, whose rights we support. While dissenting Israeli academics certainly do not face assaults as grave as those you confront bravely, we recognize that the danger you face looms over us as well. As long as Turkish academics are not free to speak their minds against racism, discrimination and war, our own freedom to do so in the Israeli/Palestinian context stands little chance to remain secure. With the greatest solidarity possible we wish you full and complete success in your struggle . We are proud to regard your exemplary struggle for a Middle East free of repression, war and atrocities as our own

For those attending the UCU annual conference please support the motion backing solidarity action, and consider ways to follow this up at branch level, and through your local Trades Council. Dear Academics, We   understand   that some of you are among  the   people   who   signed   a   petition   calling   for   an  end to  state violence against civilians and for a return to peace negotiations with Kurdish Political Party HDP. We also would like to inform you that the Turkish Higher Education Council and state  prosecutors have begun investigations of the signatories to this petition, who are accused of supporting terrorism and are facing possible charges of  treason. Furthermore, on 15 March 2016 three academics were incarcerated for signing the original call of Academics for Peace and announcing that they will start an ‘Academic Vigil’. The arrested academics are:  Esra Mungan of Boğaziçi University, Kıvanç Ersoy of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, and Muzaffer Kaya, formerly of Nişantaşı University. The court also requested the arrest of Meral Camcı, formerly of Yeni Yuzyıl University; Camcı was not arrested as she is currently outside Turkey. Under given conditions, the group titled “Academics for Peace” have decided to launch a new international campaign by sending solidarity cards direcly to the addresses of three imprisoned academics and a condemnation letter which is attached herewith to the President and Prime Minister of Turkey. Prison addresses of three academics are given below for solidairty cards: Assoc. NTEU calls for urgent action in support of Turkish academics Today NTEU has joined with twenty higher education associations, including trade unions, from around the world in issuing a joint public letter expressing grave concern over recent reports of widespread pressures on members of Turkey’s higher education and research community. (Read full letter athttp://scholarsatrisk.nyu.edu/Professor John Tully from Victoria University has initiated further local action calling for signatories to an Australian petition, launched by Australians for Kurdistan, which may be viewed and signed at http://australiansforkurdistan.org/2016/01/20/open-letter-of-support-for-victimised-academics-in-turkey/#more-185The Scholars at Risk letter responds to reports that Turkish federal prosecutors have placed under investigation approximately 1,128 scholars,  in retaliation for their co-signing a public petition urging Turkish authorities to renew dialogue with factions in the southeastern area of the country. The letter notes that some of the scholars have already been investigated for and/or charged with criminal offenses including spreading “terrorist propaganda,” “inciting people to hatred, violence and breaking the law,” and “insulting Turkish institutions and the Turkish Republic.” Dozens of scholars have reportedly already been detained and interrogated, and suspended or forced to resign from their positions at Turkish higher education institutions. “Actions reportedly taken against these scholars raise serious concerns not only for [the scholars’] professional and personal well-being, but for the overall well-being of the Turkish higher education and research community, and for the ability of intellectuals and institutions in Turkey to undertake world-class scholarship,” the letter states. The signatory organisations call on Turkish authorities to intervene before any further harm is done to the scholars, their institutions, and to the reputation of Turkey’s higher education and research sector. The signatories hope that the letter will encourage Turkish officials to end any pending legal, administrative or professional actions undertaken against the scholars concerned and to renew publicly their commitment to internationally recognized principles of academic freedom, freedom of expression and freedom of association. Jeannie Rea, NTEU National President

4. Bask Bölgesi Akademisyenleri’nden Barış İçin Akademisyenler’e destek açıklaması ve  imza kampanyası Declaration signed by academics from the Basque Country: As scholars associated with universities and higher education institutions in the Basque Country and  internationally, we are extremely disturbed by Turkey’s recent treatment of academics that have spoken out against atrocities being committed by the Turkish state against Kurds. 1,128 Turkish and Kurdish ‘Academics for Peace’ originally signed the statement “We will not be a party to this crime”, calling on the Turkish government to cease hostilities against its Kurdish population. Since the publication of this statement, these academics have been subject to a sustained campaign of abuse and violence from both the Turkish state and its supporters. In recent speeches, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has publicly denounced these academics. Subsequently, prosecutors have begun proceedings to charge all 1,128 of the original signatories with “propagandising for a terrorist organization” and “overtly insulting the Turkish nation, the State of the Republic of Turkey, Grand National Assembly of Turkey, the Government of Republic of Turkey and the judicial organs of the state”. If convicted of these charges they could face 1-5 years imprisonment. This has already resulted in 22 academics having been taken into custody (at the time of writing).   The legitimacy of such detentions and future arrests has already been questioned by prominent legal experts and described as “extra-legal” decisions. Signatories have also been publicly exposed in the press and social media by government supporters and nationalists, leading to fears of reprisals from fascists that have declared they will ‘spill the blood’ of the signatories. Many of the signatories also face disciplinary proceedings and possible sackings from their institutions. Others have already been suspended. These unjust acts are unfolding in a context of continuing state violence against Kurds- in December 2015 alone 100 Kurds were killed as a result of military operations conducted by the Turkish state. Since August 2015 there have been 52 open-ended and round-the-clock curfews imposed on over one million inhabitants in south east Turkey.  In such a context, the clamp down on academic freedom constitutes another moment in the deepening authoritarianism of the Turkish state. This includes not attacks on not only academics but also the continuing imprisonment and deaths of journalists, lawyers and activists. We call on the Turkish government to withdraw its prosecutions, immediately release all those imprisoned and commit to the principles of academic freedom and free speech. We moreover reaffirm the Academics for Peace call on the Turkish government to cease their hostilities against Kurds.
